The first competing theatre to open in 1634 was the Théâtre du Marais, built in a converted indoor tennis court in the newly fashionable Marais area (not far from the Bastille) . Indoor tennis, or real tennis, had been a popular game in Paris, particularly in the sixteenth century [ SLIDE 2 ].
